Communication Tips
Relationships can bloom - or they can be killed! - by the way you choose to talk and the words you choose to express yourself. Here are some quick tips and lessons from experts:
Watch your tone of voice.
"Nice" is the ticket to smooth relationships. That means "caring," "sympathetic," "interested" and non-judgemental. Is your tone of voice soft and nice, or vibrant and positive? Or is it harsh and rough, demanding and authoritative? Is it interested and concerned - or uncaring and bored? It doesn't matter WHAT you say - it matters how you say it. A quick trick is to make your voice go up at the end - when you call someone from across a room, or when you propose an idea, when you propose a problem or respond with a solution. Add, if you like, "does that make sense to you?" Try it. An "up" voice makes others perceive you as social, caring, and someone they can trust.
Give feedback that shows you understood something before responding.
Called "active feedback," simply repeat or reword the exact same thing someone just said and add, "Did I understand you correctly?" If you did, they'll often be prompted to refine themselves even further, since they feel instantly they have a sympathetic understanding soul to talk to. Every human being needs to feel "normal" - they need to know another human being understands their experience and validates their feelings as "justifiable."
