Eucalyptus is the active ingredient in Listerine - gargling with this product might
be the most powerful thing you can do for your mouth and throat! (See note on alcohol content below.)
Eucalyptus oil is anti-viral, antiseptic, an expectorant (for coughs) and Russian
studies show that it kills influenza. It is used as an anti-bacterian for skin cuts,
and will repel cockroaches if placed out on the counter!
Inhaling the aroma of eucalyptus helps to loosen phlegm, and can kill bacteria that
results from or causes bronchitis. It has also been shown to relieve spasms.
All that in one plant?
My great-aunt when confined to her home used Listerine to bathe her skin, and even clean
occasionally. She no doubt knew about the laboratory-proven anti-bacterian effects of
the eucalyptus ingredient.
You can boil it, make a tea of it, gargle with it. Try putting a little in your humidifier! Buy the oil at your local health food store.
You can also grow your own. Seeds
available here.
(An aside note: For gargling with Listerine or other mouthwashes, studies report that you should check the alcohol
content. DAILY usage of high-alcohol content in gargles -only those with over 25%- have been associated with an increase risk in throat and mouth
cancers. The solution? Rotate the different flavors to avoid the Daily Usage risk.)
