LIPS: Collagen Injections for Lip Lines

Yes, folks, I found that the injections to plump up my lips were, in the end, breaking down my lips somehow. It might have been the needles themselves (trauma) or maybe the crowding / squeezing effect of the collagen. I don't know, I can't get my doctors to sign off on anything. But after a couple of years of collagen injections around my mouth and in the perioral labial fold (which I hardly needed when I started!) I experienced significantly reduced firmness in my upper and lower lips, and an utter collapse of the skin from nose to chin (the perioral folds). The part of my lips where I had the injections is just folding. It's unbelievable. It looks like a mask when I pull my chin in. The skin is so much looser than the rest of my face.

Needless to say I am not a big fan of injections any more. The line that forms a nice clean border of the upper lip membrane was totally crooked and blurred on me - and not just because of wrinkles but because of what looked to me like some damage by the injections.

The dermatologist who gave me the injections tried to tell me I was just suddenly getting older. Perhaps but I doubt that was all.

I have since found evidence for my conclusion, since there are tons of sites claiming a risk of injections of all sort risk "local" or "fat atrophy."



Think about the trauma injections cause the tissue and the fat layer underneath. I think now the fact that I was "getting older" was a factor only because my body's ability to repair itself after such an invasion was reduced. (...which totally sucks, because the reason I needed the injections in the first place was my body's diminished ability to repair itself!)

There is another factor I have read others my age alluding to: I believe the fat layer was squished or damaged by these shots. I have talked to three doctors about this and none is sure I am right but all of their nurses say "Oh yes! I've seen that!" (They have also seen an allergy to collagen develop that makes the most unsightly red inflammation - which we know causes wrinkles!)

Wouldn't it make sense, if body wraps can successfully tighten skin and fat cells together, that when you shove in a bunch of collagen and crowd your own cells that there would be, for a long time, a residual space where the collagen had been? It has taken 8 months for this skin to come back and I still look MUCH worse than I did when I decided to get injections in the first place.

I talked to a plastic surgeon who thinks that Restalyn will avoid these problems since it is a hydrating ingredient, hyuralonic acid.
