Anti-Aging Effects of Exercise on Skin

Skin Aging and Anti-Aging: What we know about aging skin

May 2004 I met an older American couple in Strasbourg I will never forget. He was the one who stunned me.

His eyes were so clear and his skin was absolutely rosy. It had the beautiful healthy look that I always imagined Heidi had after she moved to the mountains, in the classic children's book. I've seen this clean, clear, healthy, young look on sailboat racers of all ages.

It turns out this man was in Strasbourg to do long bike rides and that he rides his bike at home in the states all the time near the beach. His circulation was obviously in tip-top condition and I, 20 years younger, was green with envy.

Good circulation is necessary to any beauty program because the better your circulation is the more nutrients get to your skin. The best complexions I've seen are among people who regularly exercise outside and the prettiest complexions are on those who exercise near the beach or where the air is the cleanest.

  • Exercise increases circulation of nutrients to your skin. You can take supplements until the cows come home but you need to pump the blood that carries them to your skin!
  • Exercise opens pores which increases absorption of topical ingredients you are using.
  • Perspiration from exercise creates a natural skin barrier that actually protects skin from invaders, toxins, and to a large degree from new wrinkles. Perspiration and natural oils combine to form the best moisturizer you can have for your face!

  • Exercise increases your body's production of human growth hormone - more than sprays and more than secretagogues, according to studies - which stimulates skin tissue repair and a host of processes to make look and feel younger.
  • Exercise improves your quality of sleep (most of the time! if not done too late!) which is when you secrete growth hormone, one of the ways you repair your body, and do all your major body and skin repair.
  • The process of circulation, perspiration and speeding of all organ functions through exercise speeds up cleaning, too. Age spots may well be deposits of damaged tissue that aren't being properly carried away. Exercise improves that action. A good sweat cleans out your insides which shows on the outside!
  • Exercise helps drain excess water and balance water levels in cells which can provide the instant effect of eliminating that puffy look around the eyes and eyelids.
  • Exercise exhausts and therefore relaxes all those muscles you tense up when you're stressed out! You know what THAT means: first you've freed your circulation again for efficient nutrient delivery and thorough cleansing, as discussed above. Next, you've stopped the stress reaction: release of cortisol which can cause that puffy look (everything's all restricted!).

There is nothing like exercise to quickly get the body to take care of itself. A program that includes 15-20 minutes of daily aerobics combined with stretching several times a week and weight-lifting 2-3 times a week is the plan most often recommended.
