What is DMAE? DMAE is an antioxidant chemical found in salmon and other fish. DMAE is also is a precursor to neurotransmitters (stay with me here) which are responsible for muscle contraction. This is important to our skin because it's really the muscle underneath the skin that starts to sag as we get older giving us jowls. (There is a bit more to this, too.) As we age, our resting muscle contraction becomes, well, more relaxed due to a decline in the level of neurotransmitters and that's what we are looking at when we see our saggy faces: saggy, relaxed muscles. Dr. Perricone has shown that if we put DMAE ON our skin - in a rapidly-penetrating tocial lotion - it will lift our muscles by creating acetylcholine which in turn will stimulate the "baseline" contraction level of our muscles! It wears off after some 18 hours, but Dr. Perricone has received enough reports of cumulative effects after long-term use to report the probability of long term face-firming in his book, the Perricone Prescription. Finally, we can count on a way to lift eyebrows, jowls and cheeks - without surgery. That's incredible! Dr. Perricone's first book told how we could put DMAE ON OUR FACES and it would penetrate and stimulate the muscles by getting those muscles to wake up a bit. His newer book, the Perricone Prescription, says that eating foods rich in DMAE - like salmon - will give us greater muscle tone in both face and body! This is huge news. (Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter that is increased by DMAE consumption. We can take choline or CDP-choline to raise levels of acetylcholine.)
